Q Awards: The Q Icon Award

Chosen by Q magazine
Presented by James Dean Bradfield

Winner: Jeff Lynne

Jeff Lynne started his career in short-lived Brummie psych outfit The Idle Race, before joining fellow songwriter Roy Wood in the latter days of The Move. With Wood and Lynne both interested in combining classical instruments with their usual rock kit, the pair developed The Move mark II into the Electric Light Orchestra. Creative differences caused Wood to depart, leaving Lynne to take ELO to massive success around the world with enormous hits such as Mr Blue Sky, Living Thing, Evil Woman and Xanadu. Their album Out Of The Blue was a defining album of the 70s, but Lynne moved on in the early 80s to become a producer for artists such as Paul McCartney, Brian Wilson, Randy Newman and the Everly Brothers. This superior networking led to the formation in 1988 of The Traveling Wilburys, featuring Lynne and showbiz mates, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty. Always with a keen ear for a Beatlesque melody (he was the production mastermind behind the 1995 Beatles "reunion" single Free As A Bird), Lynne is one of the most unique talents of the last 40 years and as such is a fitting Q Icon.

Jeff Lynne is amazing. This award is very well deserved! Thank you for honoring him! :)

Posted by Matt Albright at 06:04AM | October 31, 2006

An award for Jeff Lynne is always justified, but never expected. The leader of a faceless band that at one point was the worlds biggest, wrote and produced the type of songs that constantly gets people saying " yeah, I like that one, who's it by again"?
That my friend is ELO.

Posted by garry white at 07:48AM | October 31, 2006

Jeff Lynne is an absolute bloomin' genius. I was at the ELO VH-1 Storytellers show in NYC in 2001. Maybe your award will inspire him to playing some live gigs in the UK. Pleeease (oh and a new album would be nice too)... :-)

Posted by Jeff Cooper at 07:50AM | October 31, 2006

The man is a genius and rarely gets the recognition that he so richly deserves. If only E.L.O. would reform.

'Congratulations' Jeff.

Posted by Stuart Smallman at 09:21AM | October 31, 2006

A very underated artist - who as you rightly say in the blurb has straddled the generations - Continuing to work with major artists on a production level - Still an incredibly talented songwriter and one of the best producers on the planet... well done Q for seeing the talent.

Posted by Andrew Gardner at 09:30AM | October 31, 2006

I'm very happy that Jeff received this award for this great magazine.
Really is time that the press leave to him a lot of awards, the music he creates was amazing.
Congratulations Jeff!!!

Thankyou Q for recognising one of the world's greatest musical talents...

Jeff Lynne set the bar high right from the outset of his career and has never wavered since...

A gifted songwriter, a fine vocalist, a truly amazing musician and perhaps one of the greatest producers ever to sit in the producers chair, it's nice to see him recieve the recognition he so richly deserves... All he needs now is a Knighthood!

Well done... Arise Sir Jeffery!!!
:o)

Jeff Lynne is one of the greatest producers and songwriters of the modern era. "Fire On High" which opens the album FACE THE MUSIC (1975), is the greatest album opener in history. Jeff Lynne was and always will be ELO. Don't be fooled by the imposters. If it ain't Jeff, it ain't ELO. He deserves this award. Congratulations to the one man who is most responsible for ELO's great success, Jeff Lynne, a true musical genius.

Posted by Gregg S. at 11:47AM | October 31, 2006

I think Jeff is one of the forgotten and hiden genious of the popular music of the history. This award makes justice to his contribution, talent and performance in the music. The same thing with ELO, one of the biggest bands of the history...

Posted by Mori at 12:02PM | October 31, 2006

Congradulations Jeff. You certainly deserve it!

Posted by Kelly Bishop at 02:08PM | October 31, 2006

Posted by José Requena at 02:10PM | October 31, 2006

Jeff Lynne's magic touch influenced me as a child and an adult. This mastermind of music has so long been rejected by the critics it makes sense his time has finally come. Cheers Jeff!! ELO IS Jeff Lynne.

Posted by Scott Ashwill at 02:42PM | October 31, 2006

Jeff Congratulations!!, I hope and wish you'll get more awards. Thanks Q for give to him this award.

Well done, Q. What a tunesmith & producer this man is. Jeff, graba algo nuevo leches.

Posted by Pablo Solana at 03:54PM | October 31, 2006

like so many have already said, Jeff Lynne is a true musical genius who for far too long has been overlooked & not given the real credit he deserves. Because he is such a modest man who prefers to stay in the background he gets overlooked time & time again so thnak you Q for this much desrved & overdue recognition. May it be the first of many more to come as people fully realsie the influence this man has had on music over the years.

Thank you Q for honouring Jeff Lynne with your Icon Award. It's very nice to see such a talented songwriter/musician/singer/producer receiving the recognition he deserves. As musicians today continue to be influenced by his great music, Jeff's legacy will shine on.

Posted by Bob Coulter at 07:19PM | October 31, 2006

Great! Some of the Jeff and ELO's songs would deserve to represent the modern music of the mankind in a future not crewed spatial trip towards distant worlds(Tightrope,...)
Congratulations/Felicidades

I think that Jeff Lynne is the best artist of all time and when I say this...what about the Beatles you must tink. If there were no Beatles then we woulden't have Jeff Lynne.
Anyway I love Jeff! Great that he got this Q award of ICON. Yes he is!

Posted by Lynnette Johansson at 10:10AM | November 1, 2006

JEFF LYNNE is the greatest! and deserves more credit and front page coverage than all other singer songwriters put together!!

Posted by davie at 05:46PM | November 1, 2006

Thanks Q for recognizing the immensely talented Jeff Lynne! The man behind those shades and 'fro is more than deserving. His body of work over the last 35 years is quite impressive and unique. He's a modest self-effcaing guy but I hope he's a hootin and a hollerin now!!!

Posted by Brian Ault at 06:52PM | November 1, 2006

I'm glad to see Jeff Lynne getting some credit at last - I believe he's one of the most under-rated artists of the last 40 years. Well done Q Mag for recognising his musical genius.

First we had J.S Bach and then came Jeff Lynne..

Jeff, Thank you soo much for your incredible music..I think I have listen to Out of the blue 1000000 times because it´s the greatest album EVER made along with the rest of the ELO albums! I became a songwriter myself thanx to you and FINALLY you got this reward! please make more albums!!

Jeff Lynne , The true musical genius!

Posted by Johan at 08:17PM | November 1, 2006

Jeff Lynne is quite simply the best and most underated ( by critics) artist on the planet. It is about time you won more of this type of thing Jeff and programmes like the South Bank Show and Classic albums should be made in your honour to reflect your contribution to music. Well Done

Posted by Alan Hodge at 08:25PM | November 1, 2006

Took too long for you guys to recognise this man you should be ashamed , it seems that everyone who writes as pairs ie macca n lennon , john n taupin etc , i could go on ,get what they desrve stright away , godlyness , but 1 one man who wrote all those songs on his own , not only thought of the songs produced them with full orchestras and choirs , and only now .... beggers belief . WELL DONE JEFF YOU DESRVE IT . I know your nearly 60 Jeff , BUT DON'T WORRY ByTHE TIME YOU'RE 90 THEY MIGHT START THINKING OF PUTTING YOU IN THE ROCK N ROLL HALL OF FAME , after such greats as boyzone or take that etc .

Posted by MARK PICKERING at 11:06AM | November 4, 2006

I am so pleased to see that Jeff has got the recognition he so rightly deserves.

Jeff is a legendary musician, singer, songwriter and producer and has always been pushed under the carpet, like his work means nothing.

Maybe now people will see Jeff for the genius he really is.

Thanks Q for recognising him as a true icon.

Two words: "ABOUT TIME!"
Interesting that there is usually criticism of "industry awards" over the "people's awards" and yet Oasis are being slagged off (on this website) for being the people's choice of "Best Band In The World Today" [yeah...right...] while Q has got it spot on for (belatedly)acknowledging the normally under-rated genius that IS Jeff Lynne.

Apart from his legendary work with ELO, My most played CDs of the last 20 years are the Lynne-produced "Cloud 9" (by George Harrison) and the two incredible Traveling Wilburys' albums. Also, he helped turn John Lennon's mediocre "Free As A Bird" into a fantastic (and, again, under-rated) Beatles' single. Jeff's body of work is AWESOME!

Posted by Martin at 08:38AM | November 8, 2006

i've been a fan since i was at school - esp. idel race & elo. it's about time people got down on their knees b4 him !

Posted by J at 06:04PM | November 8, 2006

Hallelujah!!

I can't believe it has taken so long for jeff to get this recognition. Well done Q!

I don't care how unfashionable it is, I'm mid 30's and been a HUGE ELO fan for about 20 of 'em. Jeff Lynne is my musical God, and he is criminally underrated.

Good 'en Jeff. We're all proud of you!

Richard.

PS: Yes - he IS ELO - sorry Bev, you have to face it.

Posted by Richard at 08:24PM | November 9, 2006

Jeff Lynne is creative , have an outstanding imagination, produce , is a multi instrumentalist, an excellent singer and hhave offered some of the best pop music of the last 30 years . Zoom is a piece of work .
I´ve been following Jeff´s career since the early 80´s .He´s a Maestro , as they say in classical music .

Posted by milton izurieta at 12:10AM | November 10, 2006

Re. comment immediately above, I think even jeff Lynne would acknowledge that he is not "sobre ...los Beatles"! In fact, without "los Beatles", Jeff wouldn't have had a career in the first place. ELO was borne out of "I Am The Walrus" and "Strawberry Fields". But congrats on the award anyway.

Posted by The Ringo Starr Fan Club at 12:59PM | November 11, 2006

Long overdue, Jeff is a musical genius. A new world record is one of the best albums ever produced (Get a copy of of the recently remasterd album - Fantastic!). I love the fact that that his music has always taken center stage and not image. Most people could not tell you his name if you showed them his picture, yet he was the frontman of one of the top 50 bands of all time shows only that its the music that matters. Thank you Jeff.

Posted by Rich McClave at 02:05PM | November 11, 2006

To the Ringo Starr Fan Club member: would the Beatles have existed without Chuck Berry, Elvis, et al? Probably not. No musician operates in a vacuum, even your beloved Beatles. Everyone is influenced by others before them. Jeff Lynne is as talented and creative as almost anyone in pop music history. Don't disparage him for admitting that the Beatles were one of his influences.

Selamat utk idola sepanjang hidup saya yaitu Jeff Lynne. Semoga penghargaan yg diraihnya dapat memacu performanya dalam membuat dan merilis album ELO/Solo albumnya di kemudian hari. Oh, very nice. ELO is m 2nd favourite band, after the Beatles (ha ha) and Jeff is my favourite tunesmith of all times. Even on top of John or Paul, because Lennon-McCartney were certainly greater, but not as individuals.
Besides great songwriter, Jeff is a very fine and versatile singer.
VERY GOOD NEWS!!!

To those who knock Jeff for being `beatlesque`. Every artiste has a hero, someone they admire and are influenced by. Even the beatles were by influenced by the likes of buddy holly, chuck berry etc. Lets face it, Oasis have made a very good living out of the Beatles!! Jeff Lynne has sung, composed and produced music for many years and deserves any accolades that may come his way. AND HE WAS IN THE WILBURYS!!!! No more to be said

I adore Jeff Lynn -- the man and his music. Thank you, Q, for recognizing this magnificent talent.

I gave ELO a passing nod in the 70s, thinking they were just trying to mimic The Fabs (which they were), but Jeff found his OWN sound, his OWN voice, in his own time.

When I heard "Cloud Nine" in 1987, I was so thrilled that George Harrison finally was back on track, and looked to see who produced the LP. It was Jeff, and I was floored. I was (and AM) so thankful to Jeff for guiding George to the right "place" even after his death. THANK YOU SO MUCH, JEFF.

There was no better producer, other than George Martin, who could've brought us "Real Love" and "Free As a Bird" than Jeff Lynne. He's the most talented Beatle "fan" of all, and my Boys were safe in his hands. He did a beautiful job. THANK YOU AGAIN, JEFF.

Not a day goes by that I don't have Jeffy in my car for my commute. His words mirror what's going on in my heart and head. He is a flash of lightning in a midnight blue sky as a thunderstorm approaches; he is a reincarnated medieval knight whose head is held high from the battle won to save his (and my) soul; he is one summer dream as a sunset explodes before starlight gazes down on the world; he's midnight on the water as angry waves on English shores. He somehow captures my soul and psyche and that of so many people, as witnessed by the messages on this board.

Live on Jeff...keep writing...keep recording. I need you. I love you with all my heart for giving my heart wings again. You are my Inner Light.

One time I old my therapist about how Jeff Lynne's music and lyrics speak to and for me like no one else's. When I felt depressed, her prescription was to listen to Jeff Lynne music. His talent is my salvation. So of course it pleases me tremendously to see him recognized by others as the genius I feel him to be. Thank you and congratulations to Jeff Lynne.

congratulations to jeff well worth the award. the world top musical genius, no one can touch him, that includes elton, sting, oasis [theyre crap] and all these stars who are never out of the press. jeff has more talent in his big toe and remains a modest guy,too modest i think for his own good.jeff bring back elo and a new cd and tour and show all these guys how a genius does it.long live jeff lynne. want to meet you one day to say thanks for all the brilliant music you have done single handed.
