Singer Jennifer Hudson won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar last night (25 February) for her role in the movie Dreamgirls, nearly three years after being voted off the American Idol TV talent show. Hudson, who came seventh in the Simon Cowell-fronted programme in 2004, won the role of Effie Melody White in the film, which is a fictional account of an R&B girl group in the 1960s and also stars Beyonce Knowles, Jamie Foxx and Eddie Murphy. The ceremony took place in In another ironic twist, that proves that nice girls don't necessarily finish last, Hudson was cast in the film in preference to the ultimate 2004 American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino.
This was the only Oscar to go to Dreamgirls, apart from an award for Best Sound Mixing - the gong for Best Original Song went to Melissa Etheridge's I Need to Wake Up, from environmental documentary An Inconvenient Truth. The ceremony was held at The Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles.
Is this poetic justice? Does Simon Cowell really know what he's doing? Your thoughts, as always, are welcome...
Jennifer Hudson has since proven herself beyond the constraints of that tired, predictable "talent show". She doesn't owe them so much as a mention -- Simon often spurned her. She won the Oscar on her own merits. Cowell and company can bask in the failure of what they missed.
The fact that we ask this question shows how insignificant "celebrity" has become. Film stars and rock stars should be people that are sent, not born. The Pied Piper, Simon Cowell and his merry band of rats should be shot at dawn.

In American Idol it almost pays not to win. It seems like those in the top ten pick does better that the ctual winner. ie: Clay Akin, Jennifer Hudson and Kelly Clarkson to name a few. All those Idol wannabees aim lower and you might get a sucessful career.
