In November 1991 Jeff Buckley had just moved from LA to New York. He was an unknown, struggling musician, playing occasional club gigs as frontman for Gods And Monsters, the psychedelic outfit formed by ex-Captain Beefheart guitarist Gary Lucas.
It was at one such show that the 25-year old Buckley decided to step out of Lucas' shadow. Without warning his bandmates, he returned to the stage for a solo encore, to play country standard Satisfied Mind (previously recorded by Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash, among others). It was a revelatory moment. The ecstatic response convinced Buckley to ditch Lucas and strike out on his own. In fact, he quit Gods And Monsters the day after this performance was recorded.
What a stunning clip - thanks Q! Jeff's death was such a sad loss to the world of music. Unfortunately I never had the chance to see him live - can you or anyone recommend any good live dvd performances?

The only full-length live DVD is Live In Chicago, but it's not one of his best shows... in fact it's quite a bad tempered performance - he starts bickering with the crowd at one point. Great version of Hallelujah at the end, though.
There's some much more interesting footage on the Live At Sin-E: Legacy Edition CD/DVD package - although only about 12 minutes worth.
