“I can give you what you want/I can make your heart beat short…” You’ll recognize New Young Pony Club’s Ice Cream as the soundtrack to a recent Intel TV ad. Dead-eyed robot sex-funk of the highest order, it’s finally out as a single today (2 July), followed by debut album Fantastic Playroom on 9 July.
The band are based in London, but vocalist Tahita Bulmer has a mysterious, itinerant past that saw her following her schizophrenic, maths-genius mother around the world, from North Africa to America to Europe.
“She basically believed that stuff was going to come out of the walls and get her, so we'd better leave pretty damn quick,” explains the singer. “It would be 11 o'clock at night and all the bags would be packed and we'd be off again. An interesting upbringing…”
