Raised on a Wisconsin peacock farm, ethereal folkie Stephanie Dosen wrote her first songs for the benefit of her two favourite pets, a swan and a fox.
Whether that statement strikes you as sweet and charming - or just maddeningly twee - will determine your attitude to Dosen’s music itself, which treads a perilously slender divide between heartbreaking, gossamer-voiced beauty and earnest, Alanis Morissette-style emotional overkill.
Over the course of a whole album – Dosen’s second full-length, From A Lily Of The Spectre is out now – the effect can be somewhat treacly. But in small doses, such as this performance of album opener This Joy on Later…With Jools Holland, Dosen’s tremulous voice has the power to halt you in your tracks - a fact surely not lost on Massive Attack, who have enlisted Dosen as main guest vocalist on their forthcoming album.
