Posted by Matias at 12:50AM | January 28, 2008

Surely the Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks changed the whole face of music in a bland 1970's music era!

Posted by Andrew at 11:13AM | January 28, 2008

U2 can't qualify because they're Irish,not British.I'd personally say The Beatles-Revolver

The Clash - London Calling
The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead

I cannot pick between the two.

Posted by David Campbell at 03:06AM | January 29, 2008

Some good albums, but i would have to say 'Arctic Monkeys' - 'Whatever People Say I Am, That's What Im Not'. It's pure brilliance from start to finish. Or Pink Floyd 'Dark side of the Moon'

Didn't Q already do this a couple of years ago? Can we not have some journalism in this magazine instead of lists after lists? I wouldn't mind so much if it was a new topic under discussion.

Joy Division -- Closer. Ian's last album, absolutely without a doubt the finest work of art ever achieved by a Britsh Band. Sure there were some great albums and some pop masterpieces by the Beatles or the Stones or even the CURE.

But those don't elevate to the plane of something like a Wilfrid Owen work, a Donne poem, a painting by Francis Bacon, or the genius of Joesph Conrad. Joy Division does, and this was their finest album.

Posted by Lucy at 04:30AM | January 31, 2008

Led Zeppelin IV

Posted by Jimmy at 08:19AM | January 31, 2008

Violator by Depeche Mode - not only the best British album but the best album ever made (for some reason these lists always seem to be dominated by guitar based bands, can't see why...)

Posted by Mr Love at 08:11PM | January 31, 2008

toss up between Kid A or OK Computer by Radiohead

Posted by srikant malladi at 08:24AM | February 1, 2008

wasn't even born in the 60's but so many great British artistes emerged during that decade. How about Beatles - White Album, Zombies - Odyssey & Oracle or Kinks - Village Green Preservation Soc. All killer, no filler! (Don't listen to George Martin - the White Album is a GREAT double album). If only albums these days had the same quality control.

The Stone Roses is simply the best, never mind British, ever album. By the way U2 are not a British band they are Irish and if you look at a map of the world you will notice that Ireland is NOT in Britan.

Posted by David Westbrook at 01:01AM | February 3, 2008

The stone roses first album is a work of majestic beauty. everything about that is class.never mind the bollocks is also great the sheer anger and let's face it everyone needs a bit of positive anger

Posted by Brian D'Arcy at 12:54PM | February 3, 2008

sorry for hoggin but rings around the world or guerilla by the s.f.a are both great albums the scope those welsh lads have into varied styles of musical styles is unreal

What is the point? There is a lot of great music, why would you want to rank them? Instead give away free music from new bands without increasing the price of the magazine and see your circulation soar instead.

Tough choice

The Queen Is Dead by The Smiths

Posted by davide at 02:34AM | February 4, 2008

i can't choose between all the pale indie records of the past quarter-century, since the smiths brought a new meaning to the word overrated. perhaps the third oasis album? or maybe that last coldplay one? nah, got to be the plain white ts...

Posted by eddie at 02:53PM | February 5, 2008

Had every Q from 96 to 02 so given my era would have to say Definitely Maybe with the head or Attack of the Grey Lantern by Mansun with the heart.

Posted by IanMacAyr at 08:39PM | February 5, 2008

Hounds of Love by Kate Bush - it is still a stunning, timeless piece of art.
Some great choices though.

Stuck for ideas for the March issue of Q? Why not do a feature devoted to best British singles as you only did that about a year ago. Or best British live act maybe. I'll still keep reading Q however, as I'm stuck in Hong Kong which is an artistic desert.
