Fans of Newton Faulkner like to bang on about the dreadlocked-one’s ability to use his guitar as a percussion instrument, tapping and slapping the fretboard to conjure new and unexpected sounds. Isreal-born Yoav goes one step further, using his unplugged axe to mimic feedback, synth-sounds and entire rhythm tracks.
It’s a trick that came to him in a magic mushroom-inspired epiphany, one day in New York’s Central Park. Bored of warbling the usual singer-songwriter fare, he started pounding his guitar like a drum, and noticed a group of kids nearby had become transfixed, “whirling around to these crazy drum'n'bass rhythms like trance hippies.”
Current single Club Thing, with its sexily-snaking, Timbaland-tinged chorus, can be viewed here, but for a clearer idea of the stripped-down Yoav live experience, check out this performance of echo-drenched previous single Beautiful Lie.
