Yesterday we brought you a Scottish band who sounded like Scousers. Today we’ve got the real thing in the form of The Sonic Hearts, a big-hearted fivesome who sit squarely in the lineage of ultra-melodic Liverpool bands that unites The La’s, The Coral and, more recently, The Troubadours.
Frontman Sean Francis Butler has a voice that cracks in that classic Merseyside way, all grit and yearning, and current single To Be Someone is the perfect vehicle for it – a sweetly-shimmering anthem that builds to a harmony-drenched climax, fulfilling the band’s (mildly pretentious) stated desire to approximate “the sound of tiny stars exploding.”
To Be Someone is out 31 March, followed by an EMI-released debut album later in the year.
