Anglo-Italian Nutini-a-like Jack Savoretti got his big break in the least rock n’roll manner imaginable, when his hairdresser mentioned she also cut the hair of Natalie Imbruglia’s manager.

Evidently not an artist unduly troubled by the need to project an image of earthy, Neil Young-style authenticity, the 24-year-old Londoner is currently touring the UK as Caffe Nero’s Artist Of The Month - which makes sense, since his sturdily pleasant brand of raspy-voiced country-rock is the ideal soundtrack to sitting in a dispiriting high-street café, mournfully spooning the froth from a Decaf Caramel Macchiato into your down-turned mouth.

Cynicism aside, Savoretti has kindly made a track from his debut album Between The Minds available as a free download. Once Upon A Street is a sweetly-observed vignette about a down-on-his-luck songwriter who falls in love with a prostitute and, finding romance in the situation, duly penetrates his paramour “by a streetlight,” which sounds a touch impractical, not to mention a clear contravention of loitering laws.
