The Rivers – Got Something On Me
Any major labels looking to “seed” a new band online should take notes from Brighton’s The Rivers. Their Myspace profile is a retina-splatting blitz of social-network applications, taking in Bebo, Twitter, Facebook and MOG, plus links to YouTube, PayPal, iTunes, and a live session exclusive to Napster. Presumably the band won’t actually need to advertise their debut album; they’ll just alert their fans via “Superpoke”. What a world we live in.
Anyway. All this bleeding-edge digital bumph is somewhat misleading, since in all other respects The Rivers are a fairly traditional bunch, specialising in frayed-edge, Radio 1 indie that nods to The Kooks one moment, Kings Of Leon the next. There’s a lot of this stuff about, but Got Something On Me is potent enough to signal a bright future, since it’s a bellow-yourself-hoarse anthem that, wisely, makes its point within two break-neck minutes.
