Three Black Sabbath obsessives, two of them female, armed with a wizard fixation and a penchant for skunk-blasted psychedelia, Invasion will not struggle to get people’s attention. It helps that singer Chan brings an element of stiletto-heeled soul power to the trio’s bass-free sludge-rock, resulting in a sound that recalls Beth Ditto fronting Queens Of The Stone Age.
Like fellow stoner-rockers The Sword (with whom they are set to tour in April), Invasion are the kind of metal band that true metal fans are immensely suspicious of, since they do profoundly un-metal things, such as run a club night at East London’s hipster-central, The Old Blue Last, and consequently attract the kind of pointy-shoed fans who wouldn’t be seen dead brandishing a copy of Kerrang! magazine.
None of which detracts from the lumbering might of Moongazer, an anthem whose hard-riffing potency is only partially diminished by a lo-fi production job that gives the guitars all the sonic heft and clarity of a swarm of angry bees trying to head-butt their way out of a soggy duvet. That minor hitch will no doubt be corrected by the time the band’s debut EP, also called Moongazer, emerges in May.
