New To Q: Bon Iver

Recorded in an isolated Wisconsin cabin over a four month period, Bon Iver’s debut album is charged with a stark and lonely desperation. A bastardisation of the French term for ‘good winter’, Bon Iver is the brainchild and performing moniker of singer-songwriter Justin Vernon. Clearly inspired by the elements that surrounded him whilst recording – just look at the album cover – Skinny Love is a tear-rendering tribute to love gone sour.
The album's’s stripped down and organic sound is almost what you imagine would have happened had The Shins sat in on Springsteen’s Nebraska sessions. Replete with double tracked vocals and the plaintive, lonely instrumentation, his folky, winter-inspired musings are something to keep your ears peeled for when he tours the UK in May with Iron & Wine. He’s also playing at St Giles Church in June, which will be a fascinating setting in which to hear his songs.
