New To Q: Glasvegas

Glasvegas - Geraldine

With their clouds OF Jesus & Mary Chain feedback and '60s girl group inspired melodies, Scotland's Glasvegas were one of Q's Tips for 2008. Former Creation Records boss and Mary Chain acolyte Alan McGee even went so far as to call them "the best new band in years." Their jangly, Spector-esque songs are dominated by singer James Allan's deep Scottish accent and driving, chunky guitar lines - a sweet taster of the forthcoming debut album, due in July.
Based in Glasgow (their name is a tribute to their hometown and to the glitzy neon world of Las Vegas), the four piece wear only black clothes on stage and perform with their smoke machine cranked up to maximum. Lyrically, their songs match their clothes - Daddy's Gone, for example, deals with the loneliness of being brought up in a fatherless home, while Flowers And Football Tops is about a murdered son. Having had three singles released on independent labels, they've recently signed to Columbia. They play a host of dates across the UK this month and next - seeing them is wholeheartedly recommended.
