Bryn Christopher: The Quest

Bryn Christopher was plucked from obscurity to support Amy Winehouse last year. It was a natural match given the similarities in the old-school soul sound and tight brass-packed arrangements. There’s a touch of the Gnarls Barkley and a smattering of Terence Trent D’Arby about his recordings too. The 22-year-old has been spreading the word further this week with another high profile support, on the bill with Mary J Blige for her UK shows this week.
This debut single – out on June 9 and based on his brother’s experience as a soldier stationed in Basra – showcases a sweet, passionate vocal talent which somehow manages to hit notes that sound as though they would be painful to even try. All this over a crackling funky loop.
He also does an magnificently over the top strings-brass-and-chimes version of Portishead’s Sour Times which will be on the album My World, out in August. You can get a free download of the title track here
