Oasis artwork revealed

A big mushroom cloud in the hands of an unseen God? An astronaut, a light bulb, a gramophone, a pair of butterflies ... what does it all mean? Here we have the latest artwork for the new Oasis album Dig Out Your Soul, which is out on October 6 (you can see a bigger version here).

Is it festooned with hidden meanings or just a bunch of random images? The collage sleeve was created by designer Julian House and was apparently 'inspired by the music'. Perhaps they are just literal - after all you can see images of soldiers and there is a track called Soldier On among the 11 tracks. Or perhaps it is all just a bit of a guessing game to make you wonder what it all means. After all, when Sir Peter Blake designed the sleeve to Stop The Clocks he deliberately included some items simply to see if anyone noticed (including a doll which was on the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band sleeve).

The album features the tracks Bag It Up, The Turning, Waiting For The Rapture, The Shock Of The Lightning, I’m Outta Time, (Get Off Your) High Horse Lady, Falling Down, To Be Where There’s Life, Ain’t Got Nothin’, The Nature of Reality and Soldier On and was producer by Dave Sardy who twiddled the knobs on 2005's Don’t Believe The Truth.

“I wanted to write music that had a groove; not songs that followed that traditional pattern of verse, chorus and middle eight. I wanted a sound that was more hypnotic; more driving. Songs that would draw you in, in a different way. Songs that you would maybe have to connect to - to feel,” said Noel Gallagher.

What do you think the sleeve means?

  • Presumably the apple in the centre with the bite out of it is a reference to The Beatles, because that is what inspires most of their music.

  • The cover is brilliant IMO. It reminds me of the Corals album and Sgt. Peppers.

  • I don't think it necessarily has much of a meaning...it's just a throwback to the trippy covers of the sixties. It's very colorful...which is undoubtedly a reflection of the music...the album will be very upbeat and lively, it seems.

  • as you pointed out, the soldiers represent 'soldier on', much like the waterfall represents 'falling down' (as shown by the promo artwork for it's remix ed released), and one can only assume the record player and clock are references to the recently leaked demos, despite not being on the album, but probably refer more to 'bag it up' (apparently about buying records) and 'i'm outta time'.

the crosses are clearly 'waiting for the rapture', likewise the horses for 'get off your high horse'.

  • Maybe it means "after all these years, maybe we should admit we're not as good as Blur."
