The Voluntary Butler Scheme - Trading Things In
Why settle for one rhythm when you can have several at once? That seems to have been the approach Esser has adopted with this polyrhythmic affair which at first sounds like you have accidentally got two tracks playing at once.
From the same Transgressive stable as Foals (arf), Liam Finn and Young Knives, young Ben Esser's second single is a slice of minimal pop brilliance, just his double-tracked voice, a wonky beat, a bassline, some slightly bonkers synth drum fills and laced with squelchy oscillators. With his Mr Whippy haircut Esser skips along lyrically, rattling on about being in a "right state" after falling in love with the wrong sort, and creates possibly the first pop song ever to refer to a "knackered stallion".
He has chosen a novel way to get hold of the Lexx-produced single too. At the moment you can only get hold of the download by first buying a single. Anyone who orders a shirt either online or at a gig (he is currently touring with other Transgressive acts including Finn, Ox Eagle Lion Man and Jeremy Warmsley), you get a code which allows you to grab a copy of the single.. Neat huh?
