Mumford & Sons – Awake My Soul

Their sound curiously out of step with the rest of the world, Mumford & Sons were brought together by a shared passion for bluegrass, country and folk. Such influences infuse their work and sound particularly bizarre for a bunch of chaps in their 20s, although you would be hard-pushed to spot such youth, what with the maturity of their writing and arrangements.
US-born but London-based Marcus Mumford already plays drums in Laura Marling’s band but also finds time as singer-guitarist to front this four-piece who have benefited from Radcliffe and Maconie endorsement.
Honing their craft in just a matter of months after forming only late last year, the band this week release their debut EP Lend Me Your Eyes from which Awake My Soul is taken. It is a perfect showcase for Mumford’s heartfelt, dry-throated soulful vocals with a touch of which are almost naked for the first half of the track, with only the barest of accompaniment until, with a joyous flourish, the rest of the band join in with a gush of banjo, piano and bass.
