Track of the day: Amanda Palmer

Amanda Palmer – Leeds United
Cock Robin and David Lynch are undoubtedly preparing some sort of legal challenge upon hearing that the Dresden Dolls frontwoman is calling her debut solo album Who Killed Amanda Palmer? The feisty singer and pianist – she of the underwear as outerwear and eyebrows which she will regret as a pensioner - enlisted fellow keyboardist Ben Folds to share production duties on the album which is a progression rather than a great departure from the work with her regular duo.

Leeds United was recorded in Edinburgh shortly after the track was written last year and just days after Palmer debuted the song live. Buoyed by the spontaneity of the live sound she booked ‘a teeny, cheap little studio to cut a demo’. “That scratch vocal was done in one take, and I'd been smoking and drinking all week. I knew there was no way anyone would ever hear it but Ben, but Ben loved it … so it wound up on the record.” It’s certainly a bold recording, her voice cracking and on the verge of giving out completely while the level needle is audibly dipping into the red, but it all adds to the drama.

“Who needs love when there’s Southern Comfort?” Palmer asks amid a controlled cacophony of brass, as well as chucking in what sound like references to sandwiches and Sainsbury’s although frankly it’s all a bit difficult to decipher.

Who Killed Amanda Palmer? is released pm September 15.
