Kelli Ali - One Day At A Time

It’s more than a decade since Kelli Ali – known back then as Kelli Dayton – had an appreciable chart career as the voice of Sneaker Pimps, although you can still occasionally hear her popping up on TV soundbeds on tracks from those days such was their ubiquity.

In the intervening years she parted from the band and continued on a path of electronica for a couple of solo albums Tigermouth and Psychic Cat, as well as featuring on albums by Bryan Ferry and Bootsy Collins, but her latest work sees a complete change of direction. Written while travelling across California and Mexico, crafted while huddled round campfires in the desert, shaped by sacred canyons and the vast, open, desolate spaces, the lakes and the mountains. Kelli composed the tracks on her acoustic guitar, nicknamed El Nino, which accompanied her on her travels.

The results – certainly in the case of first release One Day At A Time - are hushed, whispered lullabies steeped in a slow-build pastoral beauty, swelling with Cathedral organ and slowly picked guitars – the soundtrack for the greatest sunrise you ever saw.

The album My Rocking Horse is “a collection of songs which resemble dark modern nursery rhymes at times … odes to the magic of nature and dreams and reflections on my journey are at the heart of these songs,” she says.

“Acoustic guitars, flute and cor anglais, violins, cello, organ and piano are just some of the instruments we used to interpret the dreamy, folk and modern classically inspired songs.”

One Day At A Time will be released as a double A-side with What To Do on November 10 and the album follows on November 24.

  • Love this song, it's the perfect song for the change of seasons, a lovely autumn sound, the golden leaves blowing in the wind.
    Beautiful xx

  • I've always been a fan of hers and this new album is shaping up to be something very unique. While stylistically its a large departure from her other solo work, the mood and timber is unmistakably Kelli. Her music is a welcome companion for those who see the abyss in life; not in fear or darkness, but in awe.
